Stockholm is built across fourteen islands, with lakes, canals and the Baltic never far away, so being able to swim is both a matter of safety and a natural part of growing up here. Sweden's lifesaving society, Svenska Livräddningssällskapet, defines being water-safe as being able to fall into the water, get back to the surface and swim 200 metres, 50 of them on your back. A swim school guides children towards that goal step by step, at a pace that suits their age and confidence in the water.
The courses on offer cover the whole journey in the water. For the very youngest there are parent-and-baby swimming and splash-and-play sessions together with a parent, where feeling safe and comfortable in the water matters more than technique. From around the age of three or four many children join beginner groups on their own, and from there they move on to technique lessons in front crawl, breaststroke and backstroke once they are already water-safe. Most swim schools sort their groups by both age and level, so every child is challenged just the right amount.
Swimming lessons in Stockholm are held everywhere from municipal pools such as Eriksdalsbadet, Forsgrénska badet and Åkeshovs simhall to smaller baths and private providers. When you compare courses, it is worth looking at the group size, how many sessions are included each term and whether the course assumes the child is already comfortable in the water. Below you'll find current swimming courses with age and price where the provider states them — click a course for more details and a link to sign up.
The courses are aimed at children from age 0. Some courses accept the Fritidskort — this is shown on the individual course. Courses run during autumn, summer and spring.

What do swimming courses for children cost?
Prices are set by each provider and vary between courses. Every course shows its own price where available — easy to compare in the list above.
Can I use the Fritidskort?
Some courses state that they accept the Fritidskort — the national subsidy for children aged 8–16. This is shown on the individual course.
From what age can children start swim school?
It varies from provider to provider. Parent-and-baby swimming and splash-and-play sessions with a parent are often available from around six months, while beginner groups where children take part on their own usually start at three to four years. Every course states its own age range — see the list above for the courses running right now.
What's the difference between parent-and-baby swimming and swim school?
Parent-and-baby swimming is about safety and water confidence for the very youngest together with a parent, with play, singing and floating. A swim school for older children focuses more on technique — floating, putting the head under and eventually swimming front crawl, breaststroke and backstroke — usually in a group without a parent.
